  1. I'm a member of the Rotary Club of Washago. We are always seeking ways to make our community a better place for everyone. If you have any suggestions or ideas for projects or needs of the community - please let us now. Do you think we need playground equipment in the park? A basketball court? Muskoka Street beautification? Let us know - right here or email us from our Rotary website.

  2. When we moved to Washago in 1999 on the beautiful Green River, I was immediately "home". I grew up in North Bay but finished school and worked in Toronto for several years. I went home to North Bay every weekend for many years because I missed the North. Living on the water was always a dream and when my husband and I found one of the last lots on the Green River, we were ecstatic. From the moment I moved here, I felt compelled to learn about the history of the area and wanted to become involved in this community. So I joined the WAG group, became involved in Washagofest, the Canada Day Committee, Victorian Christmas and the Washago Community Centre. I started "www.washago.ca" because I wanted to showcase this beautiful area wanted a way for the community and tourists to know everything that was happening. But then reality set in and I had to get a job. The one thing I regret not pursuing when I had the time and energy was a new playground for Centennial Park. The equipment down there is dangerous I am sure. My son is now at the age where a basketball court or skateboard park would be ideal and I think Washago could and should have equipment for both children and youth to keep them active and off the streets in town. A lot of great things have happened in Washago since the Rotary started up and if they are even considering working on a project at the park for the youth, I'll be the first to sign up as a volunteer to help make it a reality. Thanks Dan for starting this blog - I think it is a great idea!

People make the place what it is! I've been in the area for over 30 years, but in Washago only 4 or 5 years.I was fortunate enough to be invited to help with the last 2 heats of the dragon boat race this year.I was so impressed with the spunk of our crew....and the great teamwork effort they put into it. Washago is made up of some fantastic people....proud to be part of it...and want to be more involved!

  7. Love living in the area, but Washago the town it self is a disgrace. It looks so forgotten and rundown. With one store leaving their goods outside, making it look so so bad. The hardware store has fliers hanging off it...come on...clean up Washago...make it a place that people will be proud to visit. Washago needs a facelift!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Ok... So any suggestions on how the main drag can be improved? Do we need decorations on the light standards? Or garbage receptacles? Better sidewalks? Flower Boxes? Home Hardware did a great job with their renos. Perhaps the fliers on the store are unique and could be encouraged even more. How many communities have such an outlet? What can we do as a community to make our main drag more attractive? To say "Washago needs a facelift!!!" is a bit of a cop out. Most small towns need a face lift. Let's consider some workable solutions.

  9. John and Nelly here...We have lived in Washago for just over a year. Our spot on the Black River is a haven for many critters big and small. The mosquitoes tried to drive us away last summer but after nearly draining us dry, they went away. We'll be ready for them in the spring. Our folk band performed in Washago several times last summer and were welcomed with a real sense of community. The Dragon Boat race was also a fun day and we look forward to paddling again next time.
    Thankyou.

  10. About the facelift for Washago. I wouldn't mind seeing a few building facades looking not so dilapidated. A cleaning and a fresh coat of paint would suffice. And a garbage can or two on the street for those people who are too selfish to take care of their own garbage. But you know, I love the bulletin board, as messy as it is. It's a communication centre, of sorts. The "downtown core" might looks a bit hokey - but that suits me just fine.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I happen to like the bulletin board at Home Hardware. Yes, it is a bit messy but it does seem to be "the" place to go for local happenings. A banner festival such as the one in Orillia or a similar event could add some charm and raise a bit a funds for improvements in town. There are flower boxes in town that have been looked after for years by a group of volunteers and the gardens are looked after by the seniors and the garden club I believe. I think we are fortunate that these groups take the time to help out to beautify our area.

  12. I moved to Washago from Ottawa a little over a year ago with my two sons. We all love the peaceful living out here and our proximity to little Lake St. George. The boys play outside all the time now that we have the room for it. I am very happy here except that I feel a little isolated. I enjoy the Soulvine publication and from it I've seen that there are a few clubs in Washago that one can join to get more involved. Trouble is none of them really appeal to me. I'm wondering if there would be any interest in the area for a Gourmet Club. Basically this would be a fun club for people who like to cook, eat and entertain. I am thinking that club members could take turns hosting dinners on a monthly basis. This would be an opportunity to enjoy different types of food, share recipes and have fun making a meal something memorable. I've heard of these clubs and how much people enjoy putting together themed meals and eating them with others who are equally passionate about food. Are there any others out there like me who would want to be part of such a club?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Dinner clubs are fun. We have enjoyed some great food and fellowship at some of our dinner club parties. It is important to limit your dinner club to 6 people. Any more than 6 is difficult to orchestrate both from availability of members and prep for meals. Any less... and you might as well invite another couple for dinner and hope they return the favour. We have found that quarterly dinners club events are easier to organize than monthly if you lead a busy lifestyle. Washago is a great place for dinner clubs because you don't have to travel far to enjoy good friends and good food. The river system offers a great transportation method.

  14. Me and my family have lived in washago for 10 years now, for the last 3 years my friends and I have been into skateboarding and have had to get our parents to take us to Gravenhurst or Orillia to go skateboarding , I think that it would be great if we could get a skateboard park in Washago because their are many kids in the community that do skateboard , I know that me and many of my friends would be willing to help in any way. It wouldn't have to be anything too extream.

  15. I spent every summer in Washago on the Black River (used to swim frequently off the brige over the Green River) at my family's cottage. Unfortunately we sold the cottage many years ago but I have always wished to return and spend some time nearby. I was wondering if someone could help me locate a cottage near Washago or in Washago (preferably) that I might be able to rent out. Or perhaps if someone knows of anyone who is looking for a house/cottage sitter I could provide references. I was interested in coming down there (I now live in Sudbury Ontario) in January because that is really the only time available to me.
Thank you for providing this site.

This is a very interesting blog...

  17. My husband and I moved to the Washago area 7 years ago, are now retired and we just love it here. We love the serenity, wildlife and the many friends we have met since being here. Washago is only a 10 minute drive from our home and we visit Home Hardware (we call it the "Washago Mall" as anything and everything you need is there)each time we're there. We really do like the Post-It Board. I love the trees along the main street in spring with all of their blooms. Absolutely think it is hilarious to see vehicles parked in any direction on either side of the street and how many u-turns can be made at one given time. Kinda makes it a real "home" town doesn't it? The additon of the new "Dollar Store"was very welcomed and their selection was amazing. Went to buy a greeting card a short while back and ooops...gone..What happened there? I certainly hope it is not what I have been hearing, that would be a shame. In our view there is no better place than Washago and the surrounding area...

  18. Hi, I moved to washago 9yrs ago and I agree that we need a facelift down town. Some interlocking brick for sidewalks along the main street would be beautiful, along with those light post flags. At christmad time it would be great ti have someone get on a ladder to hang the tree light properly (i would help!) and i think most importantly the people on these committees need to allow change. I am 30yrs old and have young boys that have different needs than a 50-60+ yr old person. We want Washago to welcome young families like mine not drive them away with old fashioned ways!

  19. Love this board and all the comments. All sound good to me. We purchased on the Green last June as a vacation property but love coming up every weekend we can, even in the winter.
My husband and I love to cook and entertain. I am in to a dinner club. Maybe not monthly since we entertain a lot ourselves but quarterly would be good.

  20. I have lived on the Green River for the past 11 years and have simply loved the area, the wildlife and the village, however being a landuse planner by trade I have definate ideas that I would like to share with the community. In looking at the first photo of the main street it shows a series of cracks in the asphalt and this will need resurfacing before adding anything new. The buildings need a new look. I suggest new facades with a theme such as victorian or boating. I do like someones idea for a cycle path along Muskoka Road. I would also like to see the spagetti of overhead wires, buried but I know this is costly. ( Again look at the first photo). The green river is perfect for canoeing and kayaking and we should promote races and adventure trips, training etc. I for one plan to spend the rest of my life here. I think we could plan a special meeting for all the long time residents of Washago to tell us about the history of past families, businesses and events held in Washago. I would also like to welcome new residents somehow, even if it was a package of area business information, list of current events, gift certificates etc.

  21. HI!

I was in Washago with my 2 boys, but had to move because there's just nothing for young kids to do and/or family stuff. Everything is in gravenhurst or orillia. Can't somehitng be done to resurect the park, hockey rink..make a skateboard park, bike paths, wlaking trails, etc> THIS is needed. We also need a REAL grocery store.

  23. I love the Village and the Bulletin Board! I still hate the train whistles all night. I contacted CN a few years ago and they said said a study at a cost of $5,000.00 would be necessary. I approached Council and it took them 2 seconds to say NO! Interestingly enough, Barrie just passed a By-law banning all whistles. Severn as usual could care less; they have better places to put our money like in Coldwater!

  25. I love, love, love the sound of the night train whistle. It's music to my ears. Hauntingly beautiful; reminiscent of times gone by. Love it. Barrie is becoming a cold, heartless city as do all suburbs of Toronto. The bulletin board gives me the warm and fuzzies, too. But Washago absolutely postively needs to have a licensed restaurant, on the water, with live music capabilities. Every successful cottage town has one.

  31. The speed limit on the entire Severn River system is 9 km.per hr. and NO WAKE. Thankfully, this is strictly controlled by the OPP and residents living along the waterways who promptly report speeders to the marine patrollers. There are numerous narrow areas along the Green and youngsters are often swimming or playing in the waters so this enforcement will ensure their safety.

  38. I would have to say that the previous suggestion of a good licenced resaurant/bar with live music is key...it would create more tourist/cottager traffic in the off season (winter) with snowmobilers, as well in the peak season...I've lived in Washago now for 5 years, but last night I wanted to take the family out for dinner...guess where we went? Orillia...would much rather have spent my money in the downtown core...

  40. My Son and I visted the park today. Great job with the play area. The equipment is fantasitic.
The way the entrance is gated the park does not look so inviting. Are we going to have to pay to use the park? That is the impresion that it has.
I like the bullitin board on the Hardware Store. It is a good place to find out things.

I was wondering about Scouts. What night do they meet and where? I was hoping to find stuff like that out on the event calander.
What programs are running and when.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Jen; Glad you enjoyed Centennial Park. The park operated as a trailer park years ago. Hence the gated entrance. The Cubs and/or Scouts meet at the Lion's Hall on Tuesday nights. Not sure why the Event Calendar is not utilized. No login or user ID required. The Washago Community Centre is the best place to find out what is going on with community programs.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Jen said:
Thanks Dan for answering my Blog.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I believe wholeheartedly that a restaurant open on Friday/Saturday night would be well-supported IF:
    - it was licensed
    - the food was above average (which shouldn't be hard to do in this area of hamburgers and chain restaurants) but not Muskoka resort pricey (go to one of the local ski hill pubs for the general idea)
    - it was advertised on highway 11

Oh, and another thing: Moving the LCBO out of downtown would be a very bad move for Washago. Instead there should be a sign on the highway directing traffic to downtown "Come to Washago; We have a liquor store" (ok, maybe not those exact words but you get the idea)

  50. Does anyone know who we could call to get High Speed Internet for Cambrian Rd./West Canal Rd. & Canal Rd Area? (When our standard requests to Bell have been exhausted?)

We are currently unable to get any sort of wireless or cellular Internet and have only ever had dial up access.

As of recently our neighbors can not even get dial up access, as Bell is know longer issuing new dialup accounts to customers. The result is stranding customers with no viable options as far as Internet is concerned. Meanwhile Boyd Rd. has had high-speed access for several years and is less than a km away from this un-serviced area.

Even with dialup, simple yet mandatory tasks like website maintenance, file transfers, streaming audio/video tutorials ext. Quickly turns quick and simple tasks into planned events hours in length and needlessly wasting electricity.

Most online Collage and University courses now all but insist on a high-speed connection due to advances in audio/video streaming technology.

The increasing demand in educational and business applications makes this simply unacceptable.

If usage of these services is going to be considered mandatory, then so should its availability.

  56. WASHAGO: an ancient Indian word meaning "don't ever say anything bad about this town" as I know that any "perceived" negative comments never seem to make the blogspot. Unfortunate. How else are you supposed to make improvements if everyone "perceives" the town to be humming along just fine? Case in point .... the new Washago cottage industry ..... junk vendors. Sorry, but the Red Door Market new outdoor flea market is unbelievably tacky and bad for the look of the town! And now we have junk vendors in the car pool parking lot every weekend. And a sausage vendor with hair down to his butt and no hairnet. How come Jake's Chip Truck had to abide by every single Health Department rule but this guy just sets up as he likes every weekend? Why do we have to trip over a used video vendor every weekend in front of Washago Variety? Why can't the new Log Cabin owners provide heat in the winter? Is that too much to ask? Mrs. Kim always had it toasty warm in there. The new owners insisting on customers having to wear their coats while eating breakfast? No wonder people are not wanting to stop in our town, and established businesses are dead or dying, and packing up and leaving. Thank God though that one of them was Severn Treasures. The town looks a slight bit better now. Sorry, but the town is starting to look very rundown and tacky. Is everybody just blind? Is anybody listening? OUR TOWN IS DYING BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT TO CLEAN UP AND BEAUTIFY THE TOWN? What a waste! This town could be beautiful, and could be hopping like it was in the past. But not at the rate it is going presently. I keep hearing people say "maybe we like it this way" ....... really?
    Peace out.

  59. Dear April 16 anonymous poster:

Why don't yout tell us how you really feel? Or better still, why don't you offer constructive criticism and provide solutions instead?

This town certainly needs a facelift but there is nothing wrong with the Red Door Market, the sausage vendor or sadly, the now defunct Severn Treasures.

We need to bring cottagers to town, offer them a place to sit, talk, drink, eat; allow them an opportunity to shop for things that cottagers need; and provide services and events for the outdoor enthusiasts. We need to offer people what THEY want, not what WE want to give them. And we need to offer them all with a warm, welcome, cohesive community feel.

Remember, if you're not part of the solution, you are most certainly part of the problem.

  63. To Anonymous poster of May 15 7:07PM:
Your opening sentence was really to be expected, as always. Thus the "ancient Indian word" quote in my posting. I believe it states in the blogspot blurb that I was entitled to say my piece, anything at all, good or bad, which is exactly what I did. Obviously, you have zero respect for other people's opinions, or free speech for that matter. You want the truth? You can't handle the truth.
As far as your comment on 'constructive criticism and providing solutions', believe me, I have had lots of GOOD ideas for Washago. Unfortunately, whenever somebody brings up a really good idea for the town, someone else in town feels the need to steal that idea, claim it as their own, and run with it. Even better if they can make some money on said idea. Very sad. As a result, new ideas don't come to the forefront. God forbid a good idea was presented, but it didn't come from one of the 'Washago Three'. It just wouldn't happen. And you know who you are. You think you are so darn smart, but in reality, you are holding up the whole show.
As far as giving people what "THEY want, and not what WE want to give them" ..... first of all, you have to KNOW what it is that they want. You say provide them with a place to eat? Yeah, right. What then do you do AFTER 3PM? What if you want some dinner? S-O-L. Seriously, when was the last time you could go out for dinner and sit and eat a nice meal in Washago after 6PM? They roll up the streets at 5! They still don't have any semblance of a grocery store (IGA, etc) and how about maybe a Tim Hortons at the corner of 169 and Hamilton St.? We have needed these things for years, but we just keep settling. Whatever. As far as the "warm, welcome, cohesive community feel" ...... that certainly would depend on who you talk to, right? So let's not even go there, OK?
And quit with the 'if you're not part of the solution you are part of the problem' crap. You wouldn't know what to do with the solution if someone threw it directly at you, writer.
Time some people opened their eyes and quit being so closed-minded, and quit all the in-fighting and petty bickering. Maybe then some things would get accomplished around this town.
Also, funny how Gravenhurst now has benches and garbage cans scattered every ten feet throughout the town courtesy of Tony Clement, but Bruce Stanton would rather see Washagians stand all day, I guess. So much for giving people a place to sit. Time to get with the program now. Unfortunately, nobody knows what the program is.

  65. Hello Looking-to-Relocate-to Washago (May 25th),
Washago is a great place to live. The people are friendly, the river system is unmatched in this area, and it's a quiet, relaxing haven from the city. From what I see, there is quite a bit of housing - both for buying and renting - for various levels of income. As for teaching opportunities - I'm afraid I couldn't tell you. But we do have 3 public schools very close by. And a new university opening, in Orillia, in the Fall. And you've got both Orillia and Gravenhurst for working and/or shopping. The Northland Motel and Restaurant is just south of Washago - I suggest you come stay for a few days and check out the area. When you get here, let the locals know why you're in town. I'm sure they'll be a help. If you are here on an early (7am) Wednesday morning - come to the Washago Community Centre as a guest at our Rotary meeting - there are 21 friendly people there who will be happy to meet you.

Winter can be daunting when needing anything. The Politicians have forgotten us and we have become complacent after trying/fighting for so many years. Visited today for the first time and I think I fell in love.
I need all your help now to decide what to do. I am thinking of opening a dental practice in Washago can you please give me input as to whether that is a good idea or not. It is tough to decide as all the people I spoke to today said that the town is too small for a dentist and everyone goes to Orillia or Toronto for their dental needs. What do you guys think. Is is worth it?

  75. Our water levels are controlled by the Bureaucrats in Ottawa under the stewardship of Parks Canada. This year again they started lowering the levels in "Couch" again in mid July. The depth of water at the end of my 66' dock is now 12". Others in the area have had to push their boats off the bottom and moor them out at least 300'. After last year's fiasco I sold my boat knowing full well they would do it to us again and voila, here we are. When I contacted them as to their reasoning their response was "this was necessary due to higher than normal amounts of rain." Hello, maybe in Ottawa but certainly not here! Yes we have had downpours but we have also had long draught periods. IF you are fed up with them playing with our enjoyment of our area, contact Parks Canada and let them know how you feel. It may not do us any good but at least we might give them a migrain.

  97. Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone knew anything about when the dam under the 169 gets opened? Last year some friends and I would frequently snorkel off the dock at Oak Point road and up what I believe is the green river. It is full of turtles and big fish and the clear water makes for exceptional visibility. However, later in the year when the dam opened up the current was far too strong to safely snorkel so I'd love to know when they open it so we can get as much snorkeling in before hand.

    -Thanks again

  98. May 11 - It is different every year and depends on the water levels. Levels are extraordinarily high right now so I suspect the it will opened much earlier than normal. There is never an exact date.

  105. Hi--I'm a potential visitor to Washago. One reason is your train station--I like to travel by train. However, I'm having trouble finding out what I would do, where I would stay once I got there. Can anyone tell me what's available within walking distance (say, a 2-km radius) of the train station? Things I'm interested in:
    -bike rentals
    -boat rentals (canoe, kayak, motorboat)
    -hiking/biking trails
    -B&Bs, motels, campground
    -public beach/access to water

    Thanks very much

  106. To July 1 - The only thing available is a Public Beach/park just down the road from the Train Station. There was/is a B&B in Washago, but I think it is closed now. Unfortunately if you don't have transportation you are out of luck! Sorry!

  109. GREAT Music Festival!

Hope we could make this an annual event, and hopefully have it better attended. But a great start, for sure. Many thanks to the Township of Severn for making the park look SO good, the neighbours on Quetton St. for putting up with the sound for a day, and to all the volunteers who ran this festival like a clock. The bands were pretty darn good, especially Green River Revival .... thanks, guys. Maybe some day in the future we could look forward to a 'permanent' stage on the north side of the soccer field with a foundation block hut containing a diesel generator, so that we could put on 5-6 of these concerts each summer, with even bigger and better bands. Would be nice to see 2-3000 people with lawn chairs, blankets, umbrellas, etc. filling the whole soccer field for the concerts ....... the Washagostock Music Festival!!!
It certainly is do-able, and the venue is, of course, second to none.
    Nice job by everyone involved.
    Thanks so much.

  111. I Love Washago the way it is, that's why I moved here, if you're not happy with having to drive 10-15 mins into Orillia or Gravenhurst for groceries (which if you lived in orillia could take you that long to get to a grocery store because of traffic ect) perhaps you shouldn't move out here! That's one of the things I took into consideration before moving here. Sure some of the buildings could use some paint but that costs each building owner money unless people are willing to "donate" money, paint, time or other items that would be needed to do such "facelifts". I think store owners should definitely focus on the outside of their buildings instead of keeping prices lower for people to DRIVE BY and say "wow what a pretty store that WAS, too bad it went out of business because they had to jack up their priCes" maybe instead of complaining about the town we could all help out. Sure there is a store or 2 that looks like there having a garage (garbage) sale all day, every day, even when they're not open, and it would be nice if you didn't have to look at that as soon as u drove into Washago, but we've got a charm that most of us who live here Love!

    ReplyDelete
  116. After you have lived in Washago for more than a month... the train never passes through at night.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Dan, I'm assuming that means you get used to it. Do you know anything about Pine Cone Trail on the other side of the highway?

    ReplyDelete
  118. Yes. I find that I rarely hear the trains at night while sleeping because I am used to the sound. Pine Cone Trail will be less of an issue in future because the line that passes closest to that street is Ontario Northland (passenger service mostly) and the service is scheduled to be discontinued in the near future. The Via Rail line is much further away from Pine Cone Trail. That is the busy line. Very much off in the distance.

  125. Hi!

We moved to Washago a few years ago-on the Green.
    We absolutely love it!!

P.S. What are your thoughts on the kids playing on the bridge by the train in the summers? The new construction did widen it up a bit. But we think it's still dangerous. Especially when some people rip down the road there. Now, I've notice the cops that patrol the speed limits there. They never seem to tell the kids to pack it up even though there's a sign there indicating it's not a hang out. I guess they don't really mind. Just curious about what everyone else is thinking.

Oh, also we adore the Canoe grocery shop & bakery! What wonderful staff and set up! It truly is a nice alternative for us rather than heading out to Orillia or Gravenhurst for food!

  126. Sorry for posting again.
But about a year ago we couldn't figure out if we could catch the VIA RAIL from Washago to Mississauga/area. The website lists Washago as an option but does not indicate where/how to purchase. So, it got me curious, maybe it doesnt pick-up/drop off in Washago?

  127. Hi everyone,
This may seem like an odd request, but I'm hoping someone out there might be able to help.
I'm looking for my great aunt, who I know lived in Washago. Unfortunately, I don't have much information to go on. Any family members who could have helped, are no longer with us.
I do know that her name was May (born in 1916) and her husband was "Bud." They had at least one son, Robert, who would have been born about 1945, and possibly a second son, William, who would be older. I do not have a last name. May was not raised by her parents (her mother died after complications from childbirth when May was 6) and I believe she was raised her aunt, Janet (Graham) Thompson, probably in Toronto, but moved to Washago as an adult.
If anyone can shed some light on this family, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks so much!
    Terri

  137. Richard LeVear and Denise Grant, July 8, 2016
We spent 5 years looking for a place up north to move to from Brampton and our agent Ian Ross found us this amazing original log home that was built in in or around 1904 on Laidlaw Ave above the Severn River at the south end of Gravenhurst border being Morrison in the District Municipality of Muskoka, but with the postal address of Washago, Ontario. We are to understand this place was the original bar and tavern in the early 1900's when they were building the dams in the areas. We fell in love with this property and purchased it in May 2011 from the previous owner Wally and Shirley who had lived here for 28 years. The original logs of this homes when built were from the White Pine trees on the property the house still stands on. We have been living as we call it, god's country and have not been happier with the relaxation and enjoyment of being in this beautiful place. This is our year round home and have experienced the 12 to 15 feet of snow, minus 40 degree winters and plus 35 degree summers so far and love it all. Washago is the greatest little town and we spend a lot of time there and Denise works at the I Cottage in town which has the greatest food ever and is a country relaxed atmosphere restaurant.
Everyone that comes to visit cannot believe what we have here and are in amazement that we found this place. This original log home estimated to be over 112 years old is solid, all wood structure and unbelievably in great shape and we plan on keeping that way for our grandkids to enjoy and come to as they get older. Washago Ontario, a fantastic place to live, laugh and enjoy life as you get older.

Next up...fishing... is the river simply a stunning view or is their good recreational fishing? Types? Thanks in advance. We are moving up to the area from Niagara and there are presently two homes of interest, one on the Green and one on the Black River.
